This course is specifically designed for advanced trainees and Surgeons. Participants will develop an understanding of the basic principles and practice of colonoscopy and the latest equipment used.


Overview:

This course is specifically designed for advanced trainees. Participants will develop an understanding of the basic principles and practice of colonoscopy and the latest equipment used.

The course goal for participants is to acquire the basic skills to perform safe, accurate total colonoscopy and understand the provision of a colonoscopy service and the resources needed.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand the principles of diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy;
  • Understand the principles and practice of patient preparation for colonoscopy, including indications/consent/bowel preparation;
  • Be familiar with the design, function and set-up of the endoscope;
  • Be familiar with the controls and handling of a colonoscope;
  • Understand the principles and techniques for colonoscope insertion including torque steering, loop recognition and reduction;
  • Understand the principles and techniques for colonoscope withdrawal to maximise mucosal views and lesion detection;
  • Understand current colonoscopy surveillance guidelines;
  • Understand the management of anticoagulants before and after endoscopy; and
  • Be familiar with the accessories used and understand the principles of colonoscopic interventions including polypectomy, clipping and chromoendoscopy.

  • The Basic Colonoscopy Workshop is specifically designed for advanced trainees and surgeons.

Format:

The workshop will comprise:

  • Live colonoscopy demonstrations broadcast from the endoscopy suite;
  • Short, state of the art reviews by local faculty;
  • Interactive panel discussions of clinical challenges in colonoscopy.
