The Colonoscopy Recertification Program provides a formal mechanism for practitioners to acquire nationally-recognised certification. As part of the program practitioners are required to record their procedures in an online logbook. A new logbook must be submitted for review every three years.
The RCCC has assumed administration of the Recertification in Colonoscopy Program from 1 February 2023.
Previously the program was administered by the GESA Recertification in Colonoscopy Program Steering Committee that was appointed initially for the period from 1 May 2015 until 30 June 2018 by the President of GESA.
The members of the RCCC are appointed by the three parent bodies:
four representing the Royal Australian College of Surgeons;
four representing the Royal Asutralian College of Physicians and
four representing the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.
Committee members are experienced current practitioners as individuals and bring a range of experience in both area of practice (physicians, surgeons, colorectal surgeons, paediatricians and more) and location from the East Coast to the West Coast of Australia (including urban and rural practice).
The role of the RCCC is to:
oversee the implementation of the program;
set and review standards for recertification;
determine and oversee the process of recertification;
review, develop and deliver the education and training program in partnership with the existing GESA National Endoscopy Training Program (NETI) and
facilitate communication with stakeholders.
Recertification is designed to support practitioners in:
- maintaining their expertise in colonoscopy;
- continuing to develop their skills through subsidised training opportunities and
- increasing safety standards and the quality of care being delivered to patients.
The program brings Australia into line with international trends and with increasing consumer expectations regarding medical professionals.
