Fellow - Gastroenterology

Position Profile: The Department of Gastroenterology at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals is inviting suitable applicants for IBD and Hepatology Fellow positions starting February 2027.

Hepatology Fellow Position Profile:

No. of positions: 1

The Hepatology fellow would work within the Hepatology unit and will be involved in care of inpatients and outpatients. The job will provide the following opportunities:

· Subspecialty training in endoscopic management of portal hypertension.

· Clinical research with opportunity to be involved with industry sponsored clinical trials and links to university led research.

· Opportunity to take part in liver transplant clinics at the state liver transplant unit.

· The candidate is also expected to participate in an on-call and after-hours gastroenterology emergency roster.

IBD Fellow Position Profile:

No. of positions: 1

IBD fellow would work within the IBD unit and will be involved in care of IBD inpatients and 

inpatient and outpatient care of patients. They will have the following learning opportunities:

· 2 ERCP lists, including use of Spyglass and EH.

· 3 Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) lists.

· Additional interventional endoscopy lists, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), radiofrequency ablation for Barrett’s oesophagus, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), Zenker’s diverticulotomy, double balloon enteroscopy and enteral stenting.

· Participation in emergency on-call roster and regular clinic for assessment of patients related to Therapeutic Endoscopy.

· Fellows are expected to be part of the regular CME presentation roster and complete 1 or more research projects for publication during the year.

Fellows will also occasionally be required to provide leave cover for other non-interventional lists if required.

Requirements: Typically, successful applicants will have completed advanced training in Gastroenterology in Australia (or similar overseas) and be eligible for (or have been awarded) their Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians/FRACP (Gastroenterology).

They will need to be credentialed by the conjoint committee for recognition of training in endoscopy and colonoscopy in Australia (or similar overseas e.g. Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy, JAG).

Department Profile: The Department conducts activities across two sites. Fiona Stanley Hospital is a new, state of the art 780 bed, level 6 hospital providing an active emergency department, and a complete range of inpatient, same day, and multiday activities. Fremantle Hospital is a level 5 hospital which will provide elective endoscopy services only. The Gastroenterology Service provides well-established General Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Nutrition, and Interventional/Therapeutic Endoscopy services.

Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is a 783-bed tertiary hospital offering a range of health services including the State Rehabilitation Service, a comprehensive cancer centre, purpose-built mental health unit, maternity, paediatric and neonatal services, and the State Adult Burns Service. FSH also delivers specialised services such as heart and lung transplantations and hyperbaric medicine.

Fremantle Hospital (FH) is a 300-bed specialist hospital focused on providing high-quality aged care, mental health, secondary rehabilitation, planned surgeries and medical services.
