Zhihong Xu

Dr Zhihong Xu

Dr. Zhihong Xu completed his BMED (equivalent to MBBS) from China Medical University and subsequently obtained a MSc from UNSW Sydney. He was awarded PhD degree at UNSW Sydney in 2017. His PhD project focused on the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer and in particular, to the role of pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs, stromal cells) in pancreatic cancer progression. As part of his PhD study, he was the first in the world to demonstrate that nonmalignant stromal cells, PSCs, from primary tumour are present in distant metastatic nodules, suggesting that PSCs metastasize to distant sites and in doing so, facilitate the seeding and survival of cancer cells. He is currently working as a postdoc with the Pancreatic Research Group at UNSW Sydney, under the supervision of Professor Minoti Apte. His research interests include chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. He is a co-investigator of Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation Accelerator Grant 2018-2020. He has 12 publications and over 1000 citations in the past 5 years. He reviews abstracts and manuscripts for the world leading conferences and journals. He has received eight travel awards to attend various international conferences.
