
Dr Richard Skoien
Full-time Staff Hepatologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH), as well as a Visiting Scientist at the QIMR-Berghofer Medical Research Institute (Hepatic Fibrosis Laboratory) and a Senior Lecturer at The University of Queensland (School of Medicine). He was awarded his PhD in 2013 after studying novel fibrogenic pathways in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and has continued his research by establishing a scientific database and serum bank for patients of the RBWH with chronic liver disease. He is currently working on non-invasive microRNA biomarker panels to diagnose early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and identify patients at highest risk of cirrhosis-related complications. He is the Principal Investigator for a number of therapeutic trials in NASH, HCC and Hepatitis C and has served on Advisory Boards in the areas of viral hepatitis and HCC. He has co-authored a number of publications in the field and has presented his research nationally and internationally.
