John Liu
John received his Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Fellowship in 2016 and commenced full-time PhD studies with the University of Queensland, based at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Berghofer. His PhD focuses on the pathogenesis of serrated polyps of the colorectum, specifically sessile serrated adenomas and traditional serrated adenomas. These polyps are responsible for 30% of colorectal cancers. Thus far his research has identified mutations of the GNAS gene in a subset of serrated polyps and cancers, and characterised the morphologic spectrum of sessile serrated adenomas with dysplasia. The topic of his current presentation is on methylation and its clinical correlates in non-dysplastic sessile serrated adenomas, which may have implications in refinement of colonoscopic screening guidelines. The next phase of his PhD will be on array-based methylation analysis of sessile serrated adenomas with dysplasia.
In addition to PhD studies, John also holds part-time staff specialist positions at the Mater Hospital, Envoi Specialist Pathologists, and Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. He is actively involved in registrar training and is a member of the RCPA Anatomical Pathology Advisory Committee.
