Erin Shanahan

Dr Erin Shanahan is a microbiologist with a focus on the gut microbiome and its impact on gut physiology and gastrointestinal disorders. Erin commenced her research career at the University of Sydney, where she was awarded a University Medal and completed her PhD at the Centenary Institute. She then moved to the Princess Alexandra Hospital Brisbane and the University of Queensland, Translational Research Institute, where she identified links between the small intestinal microbiome and a number of gastrointestinal disorders including functional dyspepsia as well as chronic liver disease.

Having recently returned to Sydney, Erin has commenced a fellowship awarded by the à Beckett Trust, in gut health and colorectal cancer research. She is based at the Charles Perkins Centre, The University of Sydney. Her current research is centred on the complex interactions between the microbiome, diet and host genetic factors, and how these impact whole gut health, or conversely, risk of bowel cancer development.

Erin has presented her work at a number of national and international conferences and has received Young Investigator awards from both Digestive Diseases Week and Asia Pacific Digestive Week.
