NETI* Basic Colonoscopy Workshop - Goals
- Develop an understanding of the basic principles and practice of colonoscopy and the latest equipment used.
- Acquire the basic skills to perform safe, accurate total colonoscopy.
- Understand the provision of a colonoscopy service and the resources needed.
* The ‘National Endoscopy Training Initiative’ (NETI) was established by the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) and Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association (AGEA) to enhance and coordinate colonoscopy training in Australia. NETI comprises a series of standardized national workshops, which are aimed at physician and surgeon colonoscopists and trainees, and cover the basic principles and practice of colonoscopy.

Who Should Attend
The NETI Basic Colonoscopy Workshop is specifically designed for Advanced Trainees.
Workshop Format
The workshop will comprise:
- Live colonoscopy demonstrations broadcast from the endoscopy suite;
- Short, state of the art reviews by local faculty;
- Hands-on breakout stations and
- Interactive panel discussions of clinical challenges in colonoscopy.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:
- Understand the principles of diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy;
- Understand the principles and practice of patient preparation for colonoscopy, including indications/consent/bowel preparation;
- Be familiar with the design, function and set-up of the endoscope;
- Be familiar with the controls and handling of a colonoscope;
- Understand the principles and techniques for colonoscope insertion including torque steering, loop recognition and reduction;
- Understand the principles and techniques for colonoscope withdrawal to maximize mucosal views and lesion detection;
- Understand current colonoscopy surveillance guidelines;
- Understand the management of anticoagulants before and after endoscopy; and
- Be familiar with the accessories used and understand the principles of colonoscopic interventions including polypectomy, clipping and chromoendoscopy.
