This fellowship is tenable in association with a gastroenterological unit (medical, surgical or paediatric) in a teaching hospital, or University Department that has demonstrated interest in research into health and disease related to the broad field of gastroenterology, hepatology and related disorders. Applicants must be medically qualified, or hold a PhD.
The major conditions and the stipends for this fellowship are identical to those of the NHMRC Training Support package 1 and are assessed according to the qualifications and experience of the applicant.
During the three year tenure of the Fellowship applicants will be entitled to recreation leave not exceeding twelve (12) weeks. Under normal circumstances this means four (4) weeks during each twelve (12) month period.
Entitlements to sick and maternity leave will be in accordance with the conditions of the employing institution.
No other allowances are available.
The Society does not contribute to superannuation, loadings or continuation of service. Furthermore, time spent under this scholarship is unlikely to be counted as service contributing towards long-service leave or study leave by the administering organisation.
This fellowship is for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory progress at the annual review.
Successful applicants are required to present research work originating from the award on at least one occasion at Australian Gastroenterology Week prior to completion of the award.
Only under extreme circumstances will an extension be granted.
The Scholarship will commence in January or February 2007.
The applicant is expected to work full-time on the stipulated research project. Any additional funds anticipated must be declared and approved by the Research Committee on application.

The Research Fellow is required to provide the Society with a concise summary of research progress, including publications and presentations, by 31 December in each year of the fellowship tenure.
Late or non-submission of these reports will result in stipend payments being withheld by the Society.
The Council of the Society shall have the right to publish, or use in such a manner as they see fit, any such report, in whole or in part, providing due acknowledgement of the source is made.
