GESA Postgraduate Biomedical Research Scholarship

This scholarship is to support a science graduate within 5 years of completion of undergraduate study wishing to gain full-time research training in basic sciences related to gastroenterology and hepatology, leading to a degree of PhD.

Value

The major conditions and the stipends for this scholarship are identical to those of the NHMRC Biomedical Research Scholarship.

Leave, Fees & Allowances

Applicants will be entitled to recreational leave not exceeding four weeks in any one year which , except in special circumstances and with the approval of the Chair of the Research Committee, shall be taken during each twelve month period and shall not be cumulative.

Entitlements to sick and maternity leave will be in accordance with the conditions of the employing institution.

Compulsory fees, e.g. student, sports and union fees, shall be met by the student out of the scholarship stipend. No other allowances are available.

Superannuation

The Society does not contribute to superannuation, loadings or continuation of service. Furthermore, time spent under this scholarship is unlikely to be counted as service contributing towards long-service leave or study leave by the administering organisation.

Tenure

This scholarship is for a maximum of three years from the date of enrolment for a PhD, subject to satisfactory progress at the annual review.

Successful applicants are required to present research work originating from the award on at least one occasion at Australian Gastroenterology Week prior to completion of the award.

Only under extreme circumstances will an extension be granted.

The Scholarship will commence in January or February 2007.

Additional Earnings

Applicants shall be entitled to engage in professional work for a maximum of one working day per week, providing that:

the additional work is approved by the applicant's supervisor; and
teaching and consulting are regarded as categories of work that must have approval.

Eligibility

An applicant is required to:

Be a financial member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia. Financial is defined as "confirmed as a member of the society prior to taking up the award";
Attend the next Australian Gastroenterology Week (AGW) following notification of the award and in each year of tenure.
Correctly fill in the application form and lodge with attachments prior to the closing date.
The proposed supervisor is required to be a financial member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia at the time of submission of this application.

Reporting

The Society will accept the Administering Institution's assessment of progress reports.

A copy of the progress report including a note from the Supervisor as to the classification given by the administering institution is to be sent to the Society by the 31 January in each year of the scholarship tenure.

Late or non submission of these reports will result in stipend payments being withheld by the Society.

The Council of the Society shall have the right to publish, or use in such a manner as they see fit, any such report, in whole or in part, providing due acknowledgement of the source is made.
