Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. It is widespread in children and women in developing countries and is the only nutrient deficiency which remains prevalent in almost all industrialised nations.
This edition (first edition 2008) alerts health professionals to recent information published on diagnosis, treatment and preventative aspects of iron deficiency.
Clinicians should use this document as an aid in relation to the management of iron deficiency and not as a complete authoritative statement.
Specific recommendations are based on relevant published information and will be updated periodically as new information becomes available.
This clinical update was compiled and written by the The Digestive Health Foundation (DHF) of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia. Expert advisers include Prof. Jane Andrews, A/Prof. Don Cameron, Prof. Finlay Macrae, Dr. Sue Sheppard and Prof. Simone Strasser.
